Learning outcomes:
1. Understanding of structure and function of virus particles and prokaryotic cells
2. Understanding significance of viruses and bacteria in the development of molecular biology
3. Uptaking ecological significance of viruses, bacteria and archaea in the scope of global environment and biological diversity
4. Improving fundamentals in molecular biology by using viral and bacterial models
5. Developing basic skills in laboratory manipulating with viruses and bacteria
Course content:
1. Historical overview of virology, basic characteristics of viruses and the importance of virus research.
2. Virus structure and morphology.
3. Virus genome types and replication strategies.
4. Viruses possessing divided genome and multicomponent viruses.
5. Oncogenic viruses.
6. Subviral pathogens: types and basic features, examples of diseases with subviral aetiology.
7. Detection and identification of viruses and subviral agents.
8. The importance of viruses in ecology and evolution.
9. Historical overview of bacteriology.
10. Basic concept in bacterial taxonomy, size and morphology of bacterial cells
11. Outer structure of the bacterial cells: membrane, cell wall, capsule, flagella, fimbriae
12. Inner structure of the bacterial cells; nucleoid, plasmids, mesosome, ribosomes, inclusions, endospores
13. Bacterial physiology, metabolic types of bacteria
14. Role of bacteria in cycling of biotic elements and energy
15. Pathogenic bacteria and bacterial diseases
Practical lessons: plant virus cultivation methods, cultivation of animal viruses in embrionated chicken eggs, virus inclusion bodies, serological methods in virus investigations, methods for virus purification, bacterial cell types: staining and microscopy, isolation of bacteria from different substrates and cultivation on artificial media, identification of specific physiological processes in bacteria.
