All teaching activities will be held in Croatian. However, foreign students in mixed groups will have the opportunity to attend additional office hours with the lecturer and teaching assistants in English to help master the course materials. Additionally, the lecturer will refer foreign students to the corresponding literature in English, as well as give them the possibility of taking the associated exams in English.

Lectures and practical courses

1. Basic principles of Zoology, research areas, scientific and expertise approaches. Field trip methods, zoological collections, morphometric and molecular methodology in zoology. Barcode project.
2. History of Zoology with special respect to Croatian research.
3. Species concept - Biological species concept
Morphological species concept
Cladistics species concept
Evolutionary species concept
Molecular species concept
Species, subspecies, order, phylum - systematic and/or evolutionary categories. International codex of zoological nomenclature (ICZN) - description of taxa.
4. Evolutionary mechanisms of animal speciation and biodiversity. Systematics and phylogeny in respect to genetic, morphometric and physiological diversity of populations and species.
5. Animal biogeography with special attention on Croatian fauna.
6. Animal body plan and embryogenesis. Symmetries in animals. Development of body cavities and their phylogenetic and evolutionary basis in different animal taxa - primary and secondary body cavities, protostome, deuterostome, blastula, gastrula, mesoderm, mesoderm, endoderm, diploblasty and triploblasty.
7. Reproduction of animals - plasmogamy, autogamy, conjugation, parthenogenesis. Hermaphroditic and gonochoristic animals Biological function and evolution of sexual and asexual reproduction.
8-9. Protoza - morphology, evolution and biodiversity, impact on development of Metazoa.
10. Heckel and Hadži theory on origin of multicellular organisms. Differences between Protozoa and Metazoa.
11. Morphological, phylogenetic and evolutionary characteristics of phylum Porifera. Biodiversity and modern systematics of Porifera. Morphology and evolution of carnivore sponges.
12. Morphological, phylogenetic and evolutionary characteristics of phylum Platyhelminthes. Biodiversity of Platyhelminthes. Life cycles of some Platyhelminthes species. Evolutionary significance of parasitism.
13. Morphological, phylogenetic and evolutionary characteristics of phyla Ctenophora i Cnidaria. Cnidarian biodiversity and Croatian fauna.

Learning outcomes

1. Understanding of basic morphological, systematic, phylogenetic and evolutionary principles in Zoology.

2. Enhancing the knowledge in Zoology with special attention given to comparative zoology and organic systems.

3. Understanding evolution of particular organic systems and origin and development of particular animal taxa.

4. Understanding of functional diversity of animal body plans and their interplay with phylogeny, as well as of importance of molecular methods in modern approaches in Systematics.

5. Deepening of biological knowledge and understanding needed to assign animals to appropraite systematic categories.

6. Embracement of modern theories and methodology in zoological research.
