Researchers from the Department of Chemistry - Branimir Bertoša, Sanja Škulj, Antun Barišić, in collaboration with researchers from the Austrian Institute of Technology in Vienna (Ivan Barišić, Natalie Mutter, Oliver Spadiut) have published the scientific publication Effect of N-glycosylation on Horseradish Peroxidase Structural and Dynamical Properties. The paper was published in the prestigious journal Computational and Structural Biotechnology Journal (IF = 7.271).

The publication is a result of the joint research in the frame of the EU Horizon 2020 Marilia project, which is partly being conducted at the Chemistry Department of the Faculty of Science at University of Zagreb. The aim of the project is to develop new assays for the detection of pathogens in water based on protein-protein and protein-DNA interactions. One of the enzymes that is a prospective candidate for the development of such test is horseradish peroxidase (HRP). In this paper, the influence of the glycosylation of HRP enzyme on its structural, dynamic and electrostatic properties, which consequently have an impact on its activity, was investigated using computational methods. The discovery that the presence of glycan on the protein surface significantly alters the dynamic and electrostatic properties of the active site of the enzyme located at the center of the protein (propagated effect) is particularly interesting.
