Description:
The course should demonstrate the chronological development of ideas in geology, their mutual controversies and opposition, resistance of old ideas and their gradual submission to the newer ones. Pre-scientific epoch (antiquity, Middle ages). Neptunists ? vulcanists ? plutonists. Catastrophists ? uniformitarianists. Ice ages (glaciations). Age of the Earth. Geosynclinal theory ? plate tectonics (including fixists and mobilists in the Alpine tectonics). Constraints of the uniformitarian approach and its role in other natural sciences. History of geology in Croatia and neighbouring countries.

Learning outcomes:

Basic knowledge and understanding of the key aspects and concepts in the history of geology.
An awareness of the wider spectrum of geology as a scientific discipline.
Some understanding of the complexity of development of basic geological ideas.
Ability to undertake literature searches, and to use data bases and other sources of information.
Recognition of the need for, and engagement in self-managed and life-long learning
