Description: | |||||||||
The aim of this course is to introduce students to the methods and techniques of modern experimental nuclear physics. In addition to practical work in the lab, students will get familiar with the review of selected experiments that are in the basis of modern nuclear physics, and the methods of measuring certain parameters of atomic nuclei and reactions. In addition, students will be introduced to the basics and use of nuclear methods and techniques in other fields of science and applications. Course content by topic: Interaction of radiation with matter (charged particles, gamma rays, neutrons, neutrinos). Biological effects of radiation and protection. The main types of detectors, principles of operation of ionization detectors, scintillation detectors, semiconductor detectors, Cherenkov detectors. Fundamentals of nuclear electronics, data collection and analysis. Radiation sources and accelerators. Measurement of the characteristic parameters of nuclei and nucleons. Measurement of nuclear reactions and structure. Examples of the use of nuclear methods in other fields: medicine, energy, materials, environment. |
