Ovaj oblik organiziranja odabran je kao najpogodniji radi optimalne iskorištenosti postojeće i nabavljanja nove opreme, te radi lakše razmjene iskustava istraživača eksperimentalnog usmjerenja iz raznih grana fizike kao poticaj interdisciplinarnim istraživanjima. ZEF posebno brine za eksperimentalnu fiziku čvrstog stanja, atomsku i molekularnu fiziku, nuklearnu fiziku, fiziku srednjih i visokih energija, astrofiziku, biofiziku i edukacijsku fiziku.<br /> Zavod za eksperimentalnu fiziku predstavlja dom za vrhunska istraživanja. Njegovi članovi objavljuju najznačajnije rezultate svojih istraživanja u vodećim znanstvenim časopisima kao što su Nature, Science, Physical Review Letters, Astrophysical Journal, Physical Review A, B, C, D, E itd. Odjek tih istraživanja ogleda se u preko 2500 citata svake godine, nizu pozvanih predavanja, članstvima u uredništvima priznatih časopisa i sl. Članovi zavoda uspješni su voditelji međunarodnih i domaćih kompetitivnih projekata.&nbsp;<br /> Visoka razina znanstvene kvalitete temelj je za uspješno prenošenje znanja studentima na svim razinama, od preddiplomske do poslijediplomske.
