Zlatko Liber graduated in 1990, defended his master thesis in 1996 and doctoral thesis in 2000 at the Department of Biology, Faculty of Science, University Zagreb. Since 1992 he has been employed at the Division of Botany, Department of Biology, Faculty of Science, University of Zagreb. He was elected to the academic title of assistant professor in 2003 and associate professor in 2009.
Scientific occupations of Zlatko Liber are phylogeny, taxonomy, population, landscape and conservation genetics of vascular plants with special emphasis on the application of molecular biology and computer methods as well as development of new molecular markers. So far he has published 39 scientific papers indexed in the Web of Science, of which 20 have been published in scientific journals with more than average impact factors in their fields. He has participated in national and international scientific conferences with 72 presentations. He has been the leader of two scientific projects and collaborator in nine scientific and six professional projects. So far he has undertaken several short-term research visits to University of Ljubljana and University of Vienna.
For especially successful scientific results in cooperation with the scientists from the Faculty of Agriculture he received in 2014 a certificate of merit by the Faculty. He was the founder of the Laboratory of genetic diversity, phylogeny and molecular systematics of plants. From 2006 to 2014 he was the section editor for systematic botany and flora of the scientific journal Acta Botanica Croatica. He is a member of the Croatian Botanical Society (HBoD), Croatian Biological Society (HBD) and American Botanical Society (BSA).
Zlatko Liber is lecturer of several courses at the undergraduate, graduate and doctoral studies of biology at the Faculty of Science. Under his supervision nine doctoral theses, a master thesis and 11 graduate theses have been defended and three student researches have been rewarded by the Rector of the University of Zagreb. From 2004 to 2006 he was Assistant Head of Department of Biology for teaching and students issues, and from 2003 to 2013 Head Counsellor for students of biology and chemistry.
