COURSE CONTENT:
Chemical and biological origin of life. Cellular theory and origin of the eukaryotic cell - endosimbiotic theory. The hierarchy of biological organization. Kingdoms of life. Prokaryotic and eukaryotic cell organization. Biomembranes, ER, GA, lysosomes, peroxisomes, plastids, mitochondria, cytoskeleton. Cell signalling: receptors and main types of pathways. Structure and organization of the nucleus, from DNA to chromosomes, cell division (mitosis and meiosis). The basis of genetics, Mendelian patterns of inheritance, sex linkage inheritance, gene mapping. Chromosomal mutations and genetic disorders. Population genetics, evolution and speciation. Ecology, unit, population, biocenose, ecosystem, biosphere, environment protection.
