All teaching activities will be held in Croatian. However, foreign students in mixed groups will have the opportunity to attend additional office hours with the lecturer and teaching assistants in English to help master the course materials. Additionally, the lecturer will refer foreign students to the corresponding literature in English, as well as give them the possibility of taking the associated exams in English.

To introduce students to physiological and pathophysiological mechanisms of regulation of immunity at the level of the organism as a whole and indicate the influence of the central and autonomic nervous and endocrine system in immunoreactivity. To point out the changes in immunoreactivity in stress and various diseases and disorders of the nervous system.

Admission requirements and entry competences required for the course:
Physiology (animal or human)

After completing the course, students will be able to:
1. Describe the basic features of neuroendocrine system and immunity.
2. Understand the role and effects of stress on the neuro-endocrine-immune functioning of the body.
3. Explain how the immune system contributes to neurological disorders.
4. Present concisely the complex topics of neuroimmunology, orally and in writing.
5. Analyze scientific papers in the field of neuroimmunology.
6. Relate different competencies and knowledge acquired during their studies.

1. Introduction. The organization of teaching. Definition, Historical Review. Conditioning of immune system. Placebo
2. Phylogenetic development of neuroimmune systems.
3. The nervous system. Blood-brain barrier. Sympathetic ZS. 3D simulation. Revision of the basics.
4. Stress and stressors. Immune system and its connection with the neuroendocrine system. Immunoreactivity of persons exposed to acute and chronic stress. Cytokines, sickness behavior and depression.
5. Hypothalamus and hypothalamic factors/hormones. Pituitary gland and its hormones. Adrenal gland and its hormones. The HPA axis and the stress.
6.The effect and significance of opioid peptides in immune reactions. Metabolic changes in stress.
7. The neurochemical mechanisms underlying emotion. Neurotransmitters. GABA. glutamate. Norepinephrine.
8. The role of serotonin and dopamine system in stress and mental disorders.
9. Inflammation in neurodegenerative diseases. Neuroendocrine aspects of autoimmune diseases.
10. Neurodegenerative diseases. Multiple sclerosis. Alzehaimerova disease. Parkinson's disease. etc.
11. The neuroendocrine regulation of the immune response in the skin. Glycobiology of stress.
12. The metabolic and neuroendocrine aspects of stress in domestic and wild animals.
13. Neoplastic diseases and neuroimmunology.
14. Os brain-gut. Neuroethics: overview of the field.
15. The methodological review of the NI research. A visit to the IRB/HIM.

All students are required to hold a seminar and present with a critical analysis of scientific work in the field related to the course topic (Journal club).
