Description:
Learning outcomes: During this course students will be introduced to (i) basic concepts of microbiology, primarily biology of bacteria and viruses, (ii) basic methods in microbiology, (iii) concepts in cell and molecular biology on specific microbial examples which will enable them to (iv) critically assess and integrate the knowledge from this course with the ideas learned from the courses that will follow in senior years.
Course content:
1. Members of the microbial world.
2. Size and morphology of bacterial cells.
3. Outer structure of the bacterial cell: membrane, cell wall, flagella, fimbria, capsule. Inner structure: nucleoid, plasmid, mesosome, ribosomes, pigments, inclusions, endospores.
4. Bacterial physiology: metabolic types of bacteria.
5. The role in cycling of elements.
6. Water, soil and atmosphere bacteriology.
7. Practical:
8. Basic characteristics of viruses.
9. Morphology and structure of virus particles.
