Biography

Andrea Čobić was born in 1984 in Prijedor, BiH. She graduated from the Department of Geology at the Faculty of Science and Technology in 2008 with the subject "Comparison of crystallographic and mineralogical characteristics of allanite" (mentor: Academician Vladimir Bermanec) and thereby obtained the title of graduate engineer in geology. In 2015, she finished her postgraduate doctoral studies in Geology with the defense of her doctoral dissertation entitled "Characterization of metamict minerals with complex crystallochemical properties - example of allanite" (mentor: Academician Vladimir Bermanec) and obtained the degree of Doctor of Science in the scientific field of natural sciences, scientific field of geosciences.

From 2009 to 2015, she was employed as an assistant - scientific trainee, from 2015 to 2019 as a postdoctoral student, and from 2019 as an assistant professor at the at the Division of Mineralogy and Petrography Department of Geology, Faculty of Science. She was elected to the scientific title of scientific associate in 2016.

In his scientific work, he deals with the problem of metamict minerals with complex crystallochemical properties with an emphasis on allanite, as well as crystal chemistry, morphometry, (epitaxial) growth of other mineral species and gemological varieties (brazilianite, calcite, tourmaline, danburite, columbite, vesuvian, euclase, prehnite, serpentine group minerals, pyrite, etc.). Her scientific work also includes research into the genesis of various hydrothermal, hydrothermal-magmatic and weathering deposits (MVT, VMS, porphyry, bauxite deposits).

She teaches several courses related to mineralogy, gemology, mineral deposits as well as field course at the undergraduate, graduate and doctoral studies of the Department of Geology Faculty of Science, and has mentored more than 20 graduate and bachelor theses. He regularly participates in conducting field course in mineral deposits and mineralogy for students of UiT The Arctic University of Tromsø from Norway. She actively participates in the popularization of geology.

In the period from 2009 to 2014, she collaborated in the realization of the research project of the Ministry of Education and Culture: 119-1191155-1158, "Interaction of minerals and environment" (leader: Academician Vladimir Bermanec). From 2018 to 2020, she participated in the project "REEBAUX. Prospects of REE recovery from bauxites and bauxite residue in the ESEE region", leader: prof. Ph.D. sc. Nenad Tomašić, and from 2020 to 2022 she participated in the project "RIS-RESTORE. Evaluation of Red Mud Tailings in the ESEE region", manager: dr. sc. Ana Mladenovič, both within Horizon 2020 - EIT RawMaterials (RIS - Regional Innovation Scheme). She also participated in two Croatian-Macedonian and one Croatian-Slovenian bilateral project.

She attended and completed a number of workshops and courses related to crystallography, mineral deposits and gemology. She received scientific training in the electron microscopy laboratories at the Czech Academy of Sciences in Prague (2013-2014) and the Jožef Stefan Institute in Ljubljana (2015), where she was trained as a high-resolution transmission electron microscope (HRTEM) and scanning electron microscope (SEM) operator.

She completed courses at the Gemmological Association of Great Britain (Gem-A) in London and qualified as a licensed gemologist and diamond appraiser.

Shee is a member of the following professional associations:

  • Croatian Geological Society (where she held the position of secretary in the period 2020-2021, and is the head of the Department of Mineralogy from 2022-present)
  • Croatian Crystallographic Association (member of the Board of Directors 2016 – present)
  • International Crystallographic Union
  • European Mineralogical Union (EMU)
  • Mineralogical Society of America (MSA)
  • International Mineralogical Association – Commission on New Minerals, Nomenclature and Classification (IMA – CNMNC), in whose work she has been actively participating since 2022.
