All teaching activities will be held in Croatian. However, foreign students in mixed groups will have the opportunity to attend additional office hours with the lecturer and teaching assistants in English to help master the course materials. Additionally, the lecturer will refer foreign students to the corresponding literature in English, as well as give them the possibility of taking the associated exams in English.

Description:
LEARNING OUTCOMES:

1. demonstrate skills in field techniques with particular reference to sampling strategies of macrozoobenthos, plankton, adult aquatic insects and groundwater invertebrates
2. demonstrate distribution patterns, functional role and life history strategies of invertebrates in different karst water types
3. can use different instruments for in-situ measurements of physical and chemical parameters
4. demonstrate identification skills (crustaceans, molluscs, larval and adult insects)
5. able to analyse, evaluate and interpret scientific data

COURSE CONTENTS:
Field trips, as an indivisible part of biology/science education, improves knowledge of ecological features of various karstic water habitats, including distinctive subterranean habitats. Special attention is paid to intermittent and perennial karstic springs, streams and subterranean water habitats as well as to various survival strategies and adaptations in life history traits of aquatic invertebrates. Field trips are ideal for increasing students' experience and perceptions of methods and ways of measuring various abiotic factors and collecting protocols (collecting plankton, macrozoobethos, aquatic adult insects, aquatic cave fauna, and aquatic interstitial fauna). Students will use yellow pan trap and UV light trap for aquatic adult insects, they will apply AQEM sampling protocol on streams, they will use deep water sampler and plankton net on lakes, Bou-Rouch pumpe in hyporheic, and various types of traps and nets in cave environment. Students will be involved into methods of processing and storage of biological material. They will be divided into small groups, independently providing research on freshwater biotopes, acquiring skills that will help them to create individual research, such as collecting and processing samples, data processing, and finally to teach academic writing skills. Field trip includes a visit to the protected areas and involvement into management mechanisms as well as a visit to the facilities of economic interest (HEPP), where students familiarize themselves with the regulations and protocols of work and the negative consequences for nature.
