COURSE OBJECTIVES:
The objectives of the Basic physical chemistry laboratory 2 are: basic physical and chemical measurement methods, experimental confirmation of theoretical relations; mastering skills in measuring and processing results. The subjects were chosen to follow the curriculum of the chemistry subject in middle school education. They include simple devices available in school laboratories, and are conected to physical-chemical concepts. The student is preparing to independent work in the school laboratory.
COURSE CONTENT:
EXERCISES
The course content is divided into 7 separate exercises (each exercise takes 4 hours):
1) Data processing (excel): tables, figures, linear regression, reliability of results, measurement uncertainty and imprecision;
2) Properties of ionic solutions and the interaction of ions in the aqueous solution: to examine the dependence of the electrical conductivity of the salt solution on the concentration of the salt, determining the physical-chemical relationships and analysis of the results;
3) Neutralization reaction: potentiometrically and calorimetrically examine the neutralization reaction of oxonium and hydroxide ions in aqueous solutions. Analyse the results with the aim of determining the physical-chemical relationships and analysis of the results;
4) Equilibrium of dissociation of a weak acid: spectrophotometrically and potentiometrically examine the pH and degree of dissociation of a weak acid, determine the equilibrium dissociation constant. Analyse the results with the aim of determining the physical-chemical relationships and understanding the chemical equilibrium;
5) Electrochemical cells: Independent connection of galvanic cells and cells in which electrolysis occurs. Application of an electrolytic cell to determine the amount of charge passed (coulometer). Analyse the results with the aim of determining Faraday's law of electrolysis;
6) Dissolving salt: working and construction of a school reaction calorimeter. Thermogram analysis. Determination of the heat capacity of the calorimeter and the enthalpy of salt dissolution;
7) Raze of a chemical reaction: Time dependence of the concentration. Determination of the order and rate coefficient of the reaction. Effect of catalyst and temperature. Analyse the results with the aim of determining the physical-chemical relationships and understanding the concept of rate of chemical reactions.
