The scholarship fund was established by the Council of the Department of Biology of the Faculty of Science, University of Zagreb, at its meeting on 8^th June 2016. The idea of a scholarship fund was a result of cooperation between Professor Igor Štagljar and the Department of Biology of the Faculty of Science, University of Zagreb. The eligible recipients of the Fund scholarships are exclusively graduate students at the Department of Biology of the Faculty of Science desiring to do their thesis at the Department of Biochemistry and the Department of Molecular Genetics at the University of Toronto, in Toronto, Canada, with Dr. Igor Štagljar as their mentor.

The Scholarship Fund Igor Štagljar offers a unique opportunity for promising students in various biology fields to develop their research potential, work in a cutting-edge laboratory and take part in scientific discoveries. The work in Dr. Štagljar’s laboratory focuses on interactions of membrane proteins, involved in numerous processes and crucial for development of medicines, especially those for cancer and neurological disorders treatments. The initiative and the Fund can significantly influence the careers of future young scientists, contribute to further networking among scientists and promote collaboration between the Faculty of Science, University of Zagreb and the University of Toronto.
