Lucija Brtan completed her undergraduate studies in Chemistry in 2020 and her graduate studies in Chemistry in 2023 at the Faculty of Science, University of Zagreb. She conducted her Master's thesis research, entitled Construction and Validation of a Vector for the Expression of the Repressor Form of the GLI3 Protein in Human Cells, at the Laboratory for Hereditary Cancer, Division of Molecular Medicine, Ruđer Bošković Institute, under the supervision of Dr Maja Sabol and with the direct guidance of Assistant Professor Morana Dulić.
In 2024, she enrolled in the doctoral programme in Chemistry, specialising in Biochemistry, under the supervision of Associate Professor Aleksandra Maršavelski. In the same year, she joined the Division of Biochemistry, Department of Chemistry, Faculty of Science, University of Zagreb, where her research is conducted within the project Enzyme Engineering for Sustainable Bioplastic Recycling.
Her research focuses on enzymes involved in the degradation of synthetic polyesters and bioplastics. In particular, she works on the identification, production, and biochemical characterisation of metagenomic (poly)esterases, with an emphasis on their activity towards polylactic acid (PLA). Her work combines approaches from molecular biology, protein biochemistry, enzyme kinetics, and analytical chemistry to investigate relationships between enzyme structure, stability, and catalytic activity, and to contribute to the development of more efficient biocatalysts for sustainable bioplastic recycling.
In addition to her research activities, she participates in teaching activities at the Division of Biochemistry.
