A Research Paper Published in...

A researcher from the Department of Chemistry, Branimir Bertoša, together with recent researchers from the Department of Chemistry Sanja Škulj and Antun Barišić, and master student Matej Kožić, in collaboration with researchers from Ramon Llull University in Barcelona (Aitor Vega and Xevi Biarnés), Austrian Institute of Technology in Vienna (Ivan Barišić), and Ruđer Bošković Institute (Ivo Piantanida) have published the scientific publication Comparison of two peroxidases with high potential for biotechnology applications – HRP vs. APEX2. The paper was published in the prestigious journal Computational and Structural Biotechnology Journal (IF = 6.0).

The publication is a result of the joint research in the frame of the EU Horizon 2020 Marilia project, which was partly conducted at the Chemistry Department of the Faculty of Science. The project aimed to develop a new test for detecting pathogens in water based on protein-protein and protein-DNA interactions. In the published work, the focus was on two enzymes whose application was considered to achieve the project's goal - horseradish peroxidase and ascorbate peroxidase. Both enzymes were studied using computational methods. Molecular dynamics simulations were used to explore the structural and dynamic properties of different forms of these enzymes, the availability and topology of the active site, along with docking calculations to explore substrate binding properties. The research results favored the use of ascorbate peroxidase for the biotechnological application considered in the frame of the project, a conclusion supported by subsequent experimental investigations conducted within the project.
