Description:

COURSE AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: Phyics is a fundamental science describing phenomena and processes in the macro and microworld, including the furthermost points in the Universe. The courses in Fundamentals of physics (1, 2, 3 and 4) represent an inseparable whole, through which the students acquire important concepts, required to successfully continue and end the study of physics, or any dual master course that includes physics.
COURSE DESCRIPTION AND SYLLABUS:
1. Wave phenomena. Transverse and longitudinal wave in the elastic medium. Progressive waves in infinite media. Stationary wave (modes) in a finite medium. Differential wave equation. Impedance and wave reflection. Phase and group velocity. Doppler effect. Ultrasound. Electromagnetic waves. Poynting vector.
2. Photometric quantities. Geometrical optics. Dispersion of light. Optical instruments. Wave nature of light. Interference and diffraction, polarization of light. Interference filters. Optical grating. Polaroids. Birefringence in a crystal. Diffraction of Xrays in crystals.
