Doctoral studies in physics are provided by the University of Zagreb, Faculty of Science (PMF)

Implemented by: Department of Physics and Department of Geophysics, Faculty of Science, University of Zagreb

Cooperating institutions:  Ruđer Bošković Institute  and Institute of Physics, Zagreb

History and vision

Doctoral program in physics presents continuation of a long tradition of doctorates in physics at the University of Zagreb. Let us mention the long tradition of Croatian geophysics (the geophysical observatory dates from 1861., with scientists and teachers such as Andrija Mohorovičić), as well as regular lectures in natural sciences at the Philosophical Faculty, begun in 1876., with Vinko Dvořák as the first physics professor at the renewed University of Zagreb.

Physics in Zagreb was among the first in this part of Europe which had postgraduate programs leading to a doctorate, following the internationally recognized pattern. Namely, Professors Ivan Supek and Mladen Paić have introduced lectures for postgraduate students already in the 1950's, as an introduction to scientific research under the guidance of a mentor.

The gradual relocation of the Faculty of Science to new buildings at Horvatovac, in the immediate vicinity of the Ruđer Bošković Institute and the Institute of Physics has created a "natural science park" with new opportunities to organize doctoral studies.

A special effort is made to connect the doctoral studies in physics at the University of Zagreb to those of other Central European universities.

The structure of the doctoral programme

The study is composed as a regular three-year university course in several modules: Elementary particle physics; Nuclear physics; Astrophysics; Atomic, molecular and optical physics; Condensed matter physics; Biophysics; Medical physics; and Geophysics. The students who complete the study and defend the doctoral thesis obtain the degree

  • »Doctor of Natural Sciences in the Field of Physics« (Doctor scientiarum naturalium ad physicam pertinentium).

We are pleased to invite all PhD students, their supervisors and all interested parties to participate in the 5th edition of the Faculty of Science PhD Student Symposium, to be held on April 24-25, 2021, at the Department of Chemistry of the Faculty of Science, Horvatovac ul. 102a, Zagreb.

Due to the outbreak of the novel coronavirus, the Symposium will be held in one of the following three ways: in-person, as a hybrid model (part of the participants in person, part online) or completely online, depending on the epidemiological situation at the time of the Symposium.

Opening of registrations

Registration for the Symposium will open on February 1, 2021. In addition to PhD students who will present their research, all other interested parties are welcome to participate in the Symposium as observers, i.e. passive participants. Deadline for application and abstract submission is February 28, 2021.

Who can register?

All PhD students of the Faculty of Science and related studies (regardless of the year of their studies) can participate in the Symposium presenting their PhD research results. We invite everyone else to register as passive participants, especially students at any stage of their studies.

In which ways can you participate?

You can participate by giving an oral presentation, a flash presentation, or a poster presentation, as well as by being a passive participant. A standard oral presentation lasts up to eight minutes, plus two minutes for discussion. A flash presentation lasts up to three minutes, plus two minutes for discussion, and aims to present the most important aspects of one's research. For a flash presentation, one slide (maximum) is allowed, and encouraged. PhD students who opt for a flash presentation also need to present their results in form of a poster. Students having a poster presentation need to prepare a poster of dimension 100 cm x 80 cm (100 cm is the height and 80 cm is the width, i.e. the poster is oriented vertically).

Since results from all research areas will be presented at the Symposium, students are encouraged to formulate their presentations in a way that is suitable for a wider (scientific) audience.

Participation in the Symposium can be evaluated with ECTS credits according to the decision of the competent council of doctoral studies.

Further information and registration can be found on the Symposium website: https://www.pmf.unizg.hr/en/study_programmes/doctoral_study/phd_student_symposium .

We are looking forward to welcoming you, building new collaborations and to a constructive scientific exchange!
