All teaching activities will be held in Croatian. However, foreign students in mixed groups will have the opportunity to attend additional office hours with the lecturer and teaching assistants in English to help master the course materials. Additionally, the lecturer will refer foreign students to the corresponding literature in English, as well as give them the possibility of taking the associated exams in English.

Description:
COURSE OBJECTIVES:
The course objectives are (i) to define conservation biology as an interdisciplinary science; (ii) to explain the use and contribution of individual scientific disciplines in conservation biology; (iii) to connect the causes of biodiversity loss with their consequences; (iv) to develop a critical approach to thinking about and planning scientific research in the field of conservation biology; (v) to apply theoretical knowledge of available scientific methods in solving concrete problems.

COURSE CONTENT:

1. Introduction into conservation biology;
2. Historical principles in conservation biology;
3. Social sciences in conservation biology;
4. Spatial patterns of biodiversity;
5. Biodiversity global crisis ;
6. The anthropogenic impact on biodiversity;
7. Species concepts in conservation biology;
8. Integrating levels of biological organization in conservation biology;
9. Genes in conservation biology;
10. Population trends;
11. Population viability analyses;
12. Modelling in conservation biology ;
13. Populations in space;
14. Small populations;
15. Population growth and small populations.


PRACTICAL LESSONS
Practical lessons are organised in 7 times 2 hours in computer classroom
1. Introduction to work in Excel;
2. Estimation of population size;
3. Survival exercise (team work);
4. Biodiversity indices (estimation of biodiversity);
5. Condition indices (estimation of body condition indices);
6. Population trend analyses;
7. Ecological footprint.

SEMINARS
Seminars' topics are defined at the beginning of semester together with students, depending on their interest.
