COURSE OBJECTIVES:
The objective of the course Sustainable development in science teaching is to raise awareness of the reasons and the need to implement education for sustainable development, along with an analysis of the content, forms and methods of teaching in education for sustainable development. In addition, the goal of this course is to teach students about the application of protocols for measurements in the environment according to the GLOBE Program and to acquire the GLOBE teacher's certificate.

COURSE CONTENT:

LECTURES
1) Introduction to the course and a summary of previous knowledge about sustainable development;
2) Basic idea and content of the international scientific educational program GLOBE;
3) Atmosphere, atmospheric and climatological measurements according to GLOBE protocols;
4) Hydrosphere and measurements of physico-chemical and biological indicators of water quality according to GLOBE protocols;
5) Biosphere, cover, soil, biometric and phenological measurements according to GLOBE protocols;
6) Global GLOBE Program web site, Croatian web site of the GLOBE Program, entry of GLOBE measurement results into the online GLOBE database;
7) Historical development of the sustainable development idea, education for sustainable development, components of sustainable development, global goals of sustainable development;
8) Topics of education for sustainable development, competencies for sustainable development and how to develop them;
9-10) Values, attitudes, behaviour and social participation as goals of education for sustainable development;
11-12) Quality criteria for schools in education for sustainable development;
13-14) Education for sustainable development - methods for different age groups;
15) Themes of education for sustainable development in the curricula of the subjects of Nature, Biology and Chemistry.

SEMINAR
1) Analysis of the problems and challenges of the modern world, a look into the future (combination of group and individual work);
2-6) GLOBE e-training (solving e-modules on the GLOBE online platform for obtaining the GLOBE teacher's certificate);
7) Analysis of the global goals of sustainable development (student presentations);
8) Teaching methods for the development of competences for sustainable development and methodical analysis;
9-10) Dramatization of the problem situation and methodical analysis with the purpose of mastering teaching methods for the examination/development of students' values, attitudes, behavior and social participation;
11-12) Analysis of quality criteria for schools in education for sustainable development;
13-15) Analysis of the national and school curriculum with regard to the integration of sustainable development topics into teaching and quality criteria for schools in education for sustainable development.
