Description:
COURSE AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: The objectives of the course are the acquirement of knowledge of the thermodynamics and basic modern physics (special theory of relativity, (sub)atomic physics, quantum physics), the acquirement of operational knowledge of a method of solving problems from the thermodynamics and basic problems from modern physics.

COURSE DESCRIPTION AND SYLLABUS:
Lecture plan (15 weeks in total):
1) Heat and energy, statistical interpretation, thermal equilibrium, temperature, zeroth law of thermodynamics
2) Entropy, classical approximation of the statistical physics, equipartition theorem
3) Heat capacity, equation of state, first law of thermodynamics
4) Thermodynamics equilibrium, second law of thermodynamics, third law of thermodynamics
5) Ideal gas thermodynamics, Carnot process, mixture of ideal gases
6) Real gases, van der Waals equation, states of matter
7) Nonequilibrium thermodynamics, heat conduction
8)-9) Special theory of relativity, Lorentz transformations
10) Planck's radiation law
11) Photoelectric effect, Compton scattering, wave-particle duality
12) Atomic spectra, Bohr model of atom, Heisenberg uncertainty relations
13) Schrödinger equation
14) Hydrogen atom, multielectron atoms, molecules
15) Atomic nucleus, radioactivity, nuclear reactions
