Code: 63013
ECTS: 9.0
Lecturers in charge: prof. dr. sc. Ivan Kokanović
prof. dr. sc. Krešimir Kumerički
Take exam: Studomat
Load:

1. komponenta

Lecture typeTotal
Seminar 60
* Load is given in academic hour (1 academic hour = 45 minutes)
Description:
COURSE GOALS: Acquiring knowledge and skills in application of advanced experimental or theoretical methods to focused solving of a specific problem of modern physics. Students should join one of theory groups or experimental labs of "Northern campus" (Faculty of Science, Institute of Physics, Ruđer Bošković Institute, etc.) and make a (written and oral) seminar work in one of active research areas.

LEARNING OUTCOMES AT THE LEVEL OF THE PROGRAMME:
1. KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
1.3 demonstrate a thorough knowledge of the most important physics theories (logical and mathematical structure, experimental support, described physical phenomena)
1.4 describe the state of the art in - at least- one of the presently active physics specialities
3. MAKING JUDGEMENTS
3.2 develop a personal sense of responsibility, given the free choice of elective/optional courses
3.3 comprehend the ethical characteristics of research and of the professional activity in physics
4. COMMUNICATION SKILLS
4.2 present one's own research or literature search results to professional as well as to lay audiences
4.3 develop the written and oral English language communication skills that are essential for pursuing a career in physics
5. LEARNING SKILLS
5.1 search for and use physical and other technical literature, as well as any other sources of information relevant to research work and technical project development (good knowledge of technical English is required)

LEARNING OUTCOMES SPECIFIC FOR THE COURSE:
After successfully finishing the course student will be able to
1. Apply advanced experimental and theoretical methods in solving modern physics problems
2. Join the work of a research team
3. Assess the results of his own and research of others
4. Present results of his work in a form of scientific paper
5. Applying methods of multimedial presentation in oral exposition of research results
COURSE DESCRIPTION:
Students perform research in modern experimental or theoretical physics, which includes Condensed matter physics, Nuclear physics, Elementary particle physics, Atomic physics, Astrophysics, Biophysics etc. When choosing the research problem it is necessary that local research group or laboratory where work can be done exists, as well as available mentor (in rank of research associate or higher) who should responsibly supervise the research. Most of the time students spend doing research, where objective should match the time allotted (ca. 200 hours). After finishing the research, student writes seminar paper and gives oral multimedial presentation of his work.

REQUIREMENTS FOR STUDENTS:
To perform research under supervision of mentor, to write seminar paper and to give oral presentation to other students using methods of multimedial presentation. To listen to presentations of other students and to take part in discussions.

GRADING AND ASSESSING THE WORK OF STUDENTS:
Joint grade of seminar paper and oral presentation.
