Description:
LEARNING OUTCOMES:
1. Recognise main characteristics of life in the sea.
2. Recognise connection between processes which take place in marine organisms and between them and the particularities of marine environment.
3. Define different aspects of research in marine biology.
4. Plan own research.
5. Define endangerment of the life in the sea and justify need for its protection.
6. Explain the need for intra- and interdisciplinary collaboration in sea research.

COURSE CONTENT:
Introducing main characteristics of life and processes in the sea to the students, as well as their global importance, threats and need for its protection. After successfully passing the exam students will be able to use the acquired knowledge to understand and research the biological processes which take place in the sea.
Lectures:
1. Particularities of the life in the sea and processes which take place in it.
2. Ecological and evolutionary principles in marine biology.
3. Comparison between terrestrial and marine ecosystems.
4. Adaptation of organisms to life in the sea.
5. Reproduction, distribution and migration of marine organisms.
6. Planktonic communities.
7. Nekton.
8. Benthic communities. Meiofauna.
9. Estuaries. Tropical communities.
10. Deep sea.
11. Symbiotic relationships.
12. Living world of the Adriatic Sea.
13. Biodiversity in the sea and its importance.
14. Human impact on the sea and use of its biological resources.
15. Marine protected areas.
Seminars are thematically connected to the lectures within the same week. Literature for the seminars consists of recent scientific, review and expert papers.
