Learning outcomes: 1. to integrate knowledge of new discoveries in all aspects of microbiology, 2. to adopt different techniques of research on bacteria and viruses, 3. to develop laboratory skills, 4. to integrat knowledge of microbiology with knowledge gained in the frame of other subjects.

Course content:
Introduction to microbial ecology (2 h lectures, 2 h practicals)
Research methods in microbiology (bacteria and viruses) (10 h lectures, 14 h practicals)
Concepts of microbial ecology (2 h lectures)
Structure, dynamics and ecology of bacterial populations in soil, water and atmosphere (2 h lectures, 8 h practicals)
Characteristics of viruses, viroids and prions and infections they cause. (2 h lectures)
Ecology of viruses as specialised parasites of different cell types: bacteriophages, animal and plant viruses, viruses of other organisms. (2 h lectures, 6 h practicals)
Taxonomy of viruses (2 h lectures)
Influence of viruses on biosphere (2 h lectures)
AIDS (2 h lectures)
