Description:
COURSE OBJECTIVES:
The objective of the course Fundamentals of microbiology is to acquire basic knowledge about microbes (bacteria, viruses and subviral infectious molecules) as the simplest forms of life, causative agents of diseases and models for research in molecular biology. In addition, the goal is to learn about the role of microbes in the biosphere and the influences of the environment that can affect their populations.

COURSE CONTENT:

LECTURES
1) Significance and historical development of microbiology/bacteriology. Basic characteristics of bacterial cells ? size, morphology, arrangement;
2) Organization and common features of bacterial and archaeal cells. Cell walls' structure of bacteria and archaea. External structures of bacterial cells;
3) Internal structures of bacterial cells. Organization of bacterial genomes. Endospores;
4) Physiology and metabolism of bacteria. Metabolic and physiological types. Bacterial toxins;
5) Microbial interactions. Human microbiome. Role of bacteria in biogeochemical cycling;
6) Food microbiology. Environmental microbiology. Industrial microbiology and biotechnology;
7) Pathogenicity of microbes. Infectious bacterial diseases of humans. Antimicrobial compounds;
8) Archaea ? origin, evolution and ecology;
9) Significance and historical development of virology (1hour) morphology and structure of virus particles (1 hour);
10) Basic characteristics of viruses;
11) Principles of multiplication/replication and mechanisms of viral spread, role of viruses in the biosphere, biotechnology, gene therapy, biological control;
12) Methods of virus detection and characterization;
13) Viruses and human health: infectious diseases, sexually transmitted diseases, oncogenic viruses;
14) Subviral pathogens: viral satellites, viroids and prions;
15) Antiviral drugs and vaccines.

EXERCISES
The exercises that will be held within the course will be based on knowledge about the structure and properties of bacteria and viruses, their cultivation in laboratory conditions and their propagation. Virology and importance of viruses, virus diseases.
