All teaching activities will be held in Croatian. However, foreign students in mixed groups will have the opportunity to attend additional office hours with the lecturer and teaching assistants in English to help master the course materials. Additionally, the lecturer will refer foreign students to the corresponding literature in English, as well as give them the possibility of taking the associated exams in English.

Description:
LEARNING OUTCOMES

1. Identify freshwater fish species using determination keys and other relevant literature
2. Set up and implement field and laboratory research, with statistical processing
3. Calculate fish growth parameters, to determine optimal management in open freshwaters
4. Understand freshwater commercial and recreational fishing
5. Calculate biological quality of water using the Index of biotic integrity of fish communities (EU Water Framework Directive)
6. Draft the ichthyological part of fishing management plans and present the results of ichthyological research, and propose the optimal management of fisheries resources
7. Manage tasks relating to the ichthyology of freshwaters in public institute using computer programs

LECTURES

1. What is ichthyology? History of ichthyology. Significant ichthyologists. Abundance, classification and systematics of fish. Evolution of fish.
2. Adaptation of fish to a range of habitats. Distribution of freshwater species.
3. Basic morphology and anatomy of fish. Movement and swimming methods. Swim bladder and buoyancy. Gas exchange and breathing.
4. Osmoregulation and balance in fish.
5. Reproduction and care for young. Age and growth of fish. Fish habitats, holobiontic, anadromic and catadromic migrants.
6. Fish population sampling methods.
7. Fish population dynamics. Basics of managing fish populations.
8. Freshwater fish fauna of Croatia.
9. Principles of rational exploitation of ichthyological resources.
10. Characteristics and management of salmonid zone waters.
11. Characteristics and management of carp zone waters.
12. Ichthyological characteristics of individual watercourses in Croatia.
13. Determining the biological quality of water using the Index of Biotic Integrity of fish communities (EU Water Frameworks Directive)
14. Fisheries management plans and legal aspects of fisheries.
15. Anthropogenic influences. Regulation and deregulation of rivers. Fish trails: principles and development.
