Description:
Microbiology of Ecosystems (Microbial Ecology) provides a general overview of the diversity of microorganisms (bacteria, archaea, microeukaryotes) in marine, freshwater, and terrestrial ecosystems, with a special focus on biological interactions and the ecological adaptations of microorganisms to different habitats and conditions in light of global changes.

Syllabus:
1. Introductory lecture: historical overview of research in microbial ecology
2. Taxonomy and systematics of different groups of microorganisms
3. Ecological interactions between prokaryotes and microeukaryotes (interspecific and intraspecific interactions; plant and animal organisms as hosts)
4. Marine ecosystems
5. Freshwater ecosystems
6. Soil ecosystems
7. Forest ecosystems
8. Extremophile habitats
9. Urban and built ecosystems

For the completion of the course, students are required to explore the given topic and present it to other students in the form of an oral presentation (15mins).
Literature:
