Description:
COURSE CONTENT:
Students should adopt a broad range of knowledge about how biotechnology developed from the beginnings of human civilization to date on examples of brewing, wine making, bakery and dairy products. They will become familiar with the ever-growing range of possibilities of modern biotechnology: production of antibiotics, vitamins, amino acids, hormones, peptides, enzymes, vaccines and various nutritional supplements. Will discuss the current and future sales of biotechnology such as transgenic farm animals, transgenic cultivated plants, microorganisms designed and synthetic biology. It will be presented to the world's largest biotechnology company, the process of intellectual property protection and obtaining patents in biotechnology. In more general terms, will cover the legal regulations related to genetically modified organisms in the world and in the Republic of Croatia.

LECTURES:

1. Biotechnology: Development through the history and major milestones. The domestication of plants and animals. Fermentation: beer, wine, cheese and bread. The branches of modern biotechnology.
2. Classic biotechnological processes. Bioreactors. Optimization of the production process: organisms, growth media, increasing production volume, contamination and quality control.
3. Downstream processing: purification and concentration of the desired product. Kinds of chromatography.
4. Production of baker's yeast. Probiotics and prebiotics.
5. Production of amino acids. Aspartame and artificial sweeteners. Manufacture of organic acids.
6. The production of steroid hormones. Synthesis of C and B vitamins. Enzymes in Industry.

7. Biodiesel. Plastics from biomass. Insulin, growth hormone, interferon.

8. Production of antibiotics. Medical and non-medical use of antibiotics.

9. Plant Biotechnology. GMO plants. Conventional, organic and "GMO agriculture": the advantages and disadvantages.
10. stem cells, cloning and GMO animals. Artificial insemination and the pill. Gene Therapy. Synthetic biology.
11. Molecular Diagnostics: imunodetekcijske methods, FISH, PCR and RT-PCR diagnostics, SSR markers.
12. Biotech companies. Protection of intellectual property and patent law. The process of establishing a spin-off company based on the discovery. Careers in Biotechnology.
13. Legislative regulations related to GMOs: the world and the Republic of Croatia. Croatian Law on GMOs.

SEMINARS:
Students will, through seminars to process one of the topics related to biotechnology or will independently propose topics according to their interests. Seminar works will be exhibited in the form of multimedia presentations after which the students to ask questions and start a discussion moderated by the teacher.

LEARNING OUTCOMES:

1. Understand that biotechnology is an "ancient" human activity in which biological processes are manipulated in order to improve the quality of life, rather than an ethically questionable new era invention.
2. Distinguish and define the specifics of the various branches of biotechnology: "white" (industrial), "green" (agricultural) and "red" (biomedical).
3. Describe and understand basic technological steps in the industrial-scale production of biotechnological products.
4. Become familiar with well-established as well as cutting-edge technology applied in production of genetically modified plants and animals. Be able to critically compare it with conventional methods of manipulating living organisms.
