All teaching activities will be held in Croatian. However, foreign students in mixed groups will have the opportunity to attend additional office hours with the lecturer and teaching assistants in English to help master the course materials. Additionally, the lecturer will refer foreign students to the corresponding literature in English, as well as give them the possibility of taking the associated exams in English.

Description:
1. Reflection and refraction of light, refraction indices, optical isotropic and anisotropic crystals, birefringence, optical indicatrix, polarisation of light, polarising microscope, thin sections.
2. Observation of minerals in orthoscopy: relief, Becke line, colour, pleochroism, pseudoabsorption.
3. Observation of minerals in orthoscopy under crossed polars: extinction (parallel, symmetrical, inclined), interference colours, determination of vibration direction in polariser, compensators. Observations in conoscopy.
4. Garnets, opaque minerals.
5. Quartz, calcite.
6. Olivine, pyroxenes, amphiboles.
7. Phyllosilicates (micas, chlorites).
8. Feldspars.
9. Igenous rocks: ultramafic and mafic.
10. Igenous rocks: intermediate and felsic.
11. Metamorphic rocks of very low grade and low grade metamorphism.
12. Metamophic rocks of intermediate grade and high grade metamophism.
13. Pyroclastic rocks.
14. Clastic sedimentary rocks.
15. Organogenic and chemogenic sedimentary rocks.

Learning outcomes:

- detailed knowledge of the mineralogy and petrology courses taught during the first five semesters will be practically used in the course;
- students will acquire basic knowledge and skills to effectively conduct the methods and use of sophisticated tool like polarizing microscope, students will also develop new skills in response to new knowledge and techniques;
- with active participation in preparation students will acquire basic knowledge for understanding and solving problems by multidisciplinary linking knowledge;
- demonstrate critical thinking in problem solving, including use of information from scientific sources. Acquire experience of teamwork in a complex research environment;
- upon completion of the course, students will have developed analytical abilities and critical thinking. They will increase communication skills.
