All teaching activities will be held in Croatian. However, foreign students in mixed groups will have the opportunity to attend additional office hours with the lecturer and teaching assistants in English to help master the course materials. Additionally, the lecturer will refer foreign students to the corresponding literature in English, as well as give them the possibility of taking the associated exams in English.

Description:
Learning outcomes
1. Understand the basic goals and working methods in palaeontology
2. Understand the fossilization processes and distinguish the most common lagerstatten.
3. Learn about the preservation potential and fossil representatives of different fossil groups.
4. Apply paleontological data to the interpretation of palaeoenvironment.
5. Learn how to use fossils in determination of geological age and Earth history.

1. Definition of fossils and subdisciplines in palaeontology. Fossilization processes.
2. Fossil lagerstatten. Preservational potential.
3. Methods and techniques in palaeontology. Field work, laboratory preparation. Statistical methods, graphics and photography.
4. Taxonomy and systematics in palaeontology. Nomenclature. Problems in determination of taxa.
5. Fossil Archaea and Bacteria
6. Protista (diatoms, dinoflagellates, coccolithophores, foraminifers, radiolarians).
7. Green and red algae. Mosses, ferns and seed plants.
8. Animalia 1 - Porifera, Anthozoa
9. Animalia 2 - Mollusca, Bryozoa, Brachiopoda
10. Animalia 3 - Arthropoda, Echinodermata
11. Animalia 4 - Hemichordata, Chordata
12. Principles of palaeoecology
13. Facies. Ichnofacies, microfacies.
