Description:
COURSE GOALS:
The principal objective of the course Introductory physics laboratory 2 is gathering experience in experimental work by performing measurements on simple experimental set-ups related to hydrodynamics, thermodynamics and optics. By performing measurements and analysing measured data student will demonstrate their understanding of the basic principles of operation of the experimental set-ups and of the theoretical background of the studied phenomena as well as their knowledge of basic statistical methods.

LEARNING OUTCOMES AT THE LEVEL OF THE PROGRAMME:
Upon completing the degree, students will be able to:
1 KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
1.1 demonstrate a thorough knowledge of the most important physics theories (logical and mathematical structure, experimental support, described physical phenomena)
2 APPLYING KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
2.1 evaluate clearly the orders of magnitude in situations which are physically different, but show analogies, thus allowing the use of known solutions in new problems
2.2 adapt available models to new experimental data
2.3 perform experiments independently using standard techniques, as well as to describe, analyze and critically evaluate experimental data
3 MAKING JUDGEMENTS
3.1 work with a high degree of autonomy, even accepting responsibilities in project planning and in the managing of structures
4 COMMUNICATION SKILLS
4.1 present one's own research or literature search results to professional as well as to lay audiences
5 LEARNING SKILLS
5.1 carry out research by undertaking a PhD
LEARNING OUTCOMES SPECIFIC FOR THE COURSE:
Upon completing the course Introductory physics laboratory 2, students will be able to:
1. use simple instrumentation and methods related to hydrodynamics, thermodynamics and optics according to given instructions
2. analyse measured data using statistical methods and simple analysis software
3. compare the results with the expectations from theory
4. present the results in the form of a complete report

COURSE DESCRIPTION:
During one semester, students will perform seven laboratory exercises:
1. Surface tension by the ring method
2. Viscosity measurements with the falling ball viscometer
3. Density of liquids
4. Equation of state of ideal gases
5. Laws of lenses and optical instruments
6. Measuring the velocity of light
7. Diffraction of light at a slit and interference of light

REQUIREMENTS FOR STUDENTS:
To understand the principles of operation of experimental set-ups, students should prepare before carrying out each exercise. They have to perform measurements according to given instructions and write a report with the results, the statistical analysis and graphs.

GRADING AND ASSESSING THE WORK OF STUDENTS:
Students are graded for each exercise. The grade is formed from the written exam (20%), their understanding of the physical background of the studied phenomena (40%) and the final report (40%). The final grade is based on the average grade of all exercises.
Literature:
  1. Pripreme za vježbe, za internu upotrebu
    Predavanja i udžbenici korišteni na Općoj fizici 1, 2 i 3
    Udžbenici opće fizike po izboru.
