Jelena Lončar graduated in 2002 with the thesis "Processes of Globalization and Regionalization in Europe and Their Impact on Croatia" and thus earned the title of Professor of Geography. In 2005, she enrolled in the Postgraduate Study of Geographical Foundations of Spatial Planning and Development and was employed as a research assistant at the Department of Geography at the Faculty of Science in Zagreb. She collaborated on the projects "Regional-Geographical Research of Croatia" (2004-2007), "The Impact of Globalization and Transition on the Regional Development of Croatia" (2007-2009), and "Environmental Changes and Cultural Landscape as a Development Resource" (2009-2012). She completed her postgraduate studies in 2011 with the defense of her doctoral thesis entitled "Economic-Geographical Restructuring of Central Croatia in Conditions of Transition".
As part of the Central European exchange program for university studies CEEPUS, she stayed at several foreign universities from 2009 to 2019: the Department of Geography at the Faculty of Philosophy in Maribor, the Faculty of Geography, Tourism, Sports and Territorial Planning at the University of Oradea (Romania), the Department of Geography at Charles University in Prague and the Department of Geography in Brno. She also stayed at the Geography Department of the University of Oulu (Finland) - as part of Erasmus. Since 2014, she has been actively involved in projects financed by the European Union through the IPA program: Innovative urban strategies and action plans to increase the social and economic role for seniors - SILVER CITY, and Co-operation of SEE (Southeast European) science parks for the promotion of transnational market uptake of R&D results and technologies by SMEs.
From the academic year 2005/2006. participates in teaching at the undergraduate study program of the Department of Geography, and since 2006/07. at the Undergraduate and Graduate University Study Program in Geography. She is also actively involved in the Doctoral study program. She participates in the organization and implementation of fieldwork and as a mentor for graduate papers. Her scientific interest and research are related to issues within the framework of economic, industrial and political geography, as well as globalization and regional development.
She is actively involved in the organization and implementation of conferences and congresses at the Department of Geography. She has given several lectures at professional conferences organized by the Croatian Geographical Society and participates in its activities. Since 2018, she has been a member of the Board of Directors of the HGD and serves as the secretary of the aforementioned society. Since 2024, she has been the editor of the professional journal Geografski horizont.
