Biography

Born in Samobor in 1965, though she has lived in Zagreb since 1972, where she completed primary and secondary school, and undergraduate and postgraduate studies in geography. She enrolled in the study of geography in 1984, and graduated in 1988 with the final paper Intracity migrations of the Zagreb population. That same year, she received the Rector’s Award for best student at the Faculty of Science. She continued her education in the postgraduate study of Geographic basis of spatial planning. She received her Master’s degree in 1993 with the thesis Zagreb – social topography of the city, and her Doctorate in 2003 with the dissertation Satellite formation of Zagreb agglomerations – the demogeographic aspects of the process.

She has been employed at the Department of Geography, Faculty of Science, University of Zagreb since 1990, first as a junior researcher, then in 1998 as a research assistant, 2003 as a senior research assistant, and in 2007 she was named an assistant professor. From 2010 to 2012, she served as Head of the Division of Social Geography.

Her scientific interests are demogeography and urban geography. To date, her research has primarily focused on the demographic dynamics and structural changes of population as indicators of the functional and spatial transformation of city quarters, different aspects of the social topography as part of the population structure of the city, spatial properties of natality in Croatia, and aspects of (in)accessibility of the city environment for persons in wheelchairs.

She has actively participated in three domestic scientific projects financed by the Ministry of Science and Education: Urbanisation of Croatia (1990–2002), Urban systems and spatial organisation of Croatia (2002–2006) and Spatial properties of the demographic resources of Croatia (2007–2013), in addition to a number of smaller projects financed by University grants.

She has published 12 scientific papers, of which 10 independently and 2 as a co-author. She has participated with submissions at four international and four Croatian scientific conferences. She was a member of the scientific board of the 5th and 7th Croatian Geographic Conference held in Osijek in 2011 and Čakovec in 2019. She has also published eight expert papers in domestic journals and one book chapter.

At the Department of Geography, Faculty of Science, she teaches the courses Statistics and graphical methods in geography, and Demogeography in the undergraduate research and integrated teacher study programmes, and the course Demographic analyses of small areas in the graduate research study programme. She is leader of a field course, and co-teaches two methodology courses in the Doctoral study of Geography: Space, Region, Environment, Landscape. She has supervised 16 baccalaureate and 17 graduate final papers, and three doctoral dissertations (one as a co-mentor).
