Matej Plavac, univ. mag. geol.

Biography

Geology Master's Graduate with experience in optical microscopy, provenance analysis and interdisciplinary collaborate research.

Throughout his education and research experience, Matej has developed a broad foundation in geology, ranging from classical sedimentological and petrological studies at the University of Zagreb’s Faculty of Science to ore waste management and geochemical mapping of mines and open pits through additional international education programmes organized by the EIT RawMaterials Academy. For his master thesis research, under the mentorship of Ph.D. Assoc. Prof. Borna Lužar-Oberiter and Ph.D. Asst. Prof. Zorica Petrinec, he focused on the petrological characteristics of coarse-grained Eocene deposits from Zrinska Gora (Croatia), with a particular emphasis on detailed thin section analysis of granitoid and metamorphic rock clasts and their provenance. He has gained additional practical experience through internships as a part of the "ProSPer" project and as a student intern at the Croatian Geological Survey.

Matej Plavac is currently employed as an assistant at the Division of Mineralogy and Petrology, where, in addition to teaching responsibilities in courses System of mineralogy and Geology of mineral deposits, he is enrolled in the doctoral studies in Geology. Matej's research focuses on clastic Paleogene sediments exposed along the eastern branch of the geotectonic unit Sava Zone. In these deposits, he is primarily interested in the geochemical characteristics of granitoid rock clasts and the heavy mineral fraction, as well as their geotectonic placement within magmatic units, the provenance of the sediments, and their regional significance.
