**Name of qualification**

Bachelor of Education in Mathematics

**Programme requirements**

The Undergraduate University Programme in Mathematics Education is the first cycle in the Bologna education system of 3+2 university education of mathematicians specialized in teaching mathematics and/or computer science at the lower and higher levels of secondary education (upper grades of elementary schools and secondary schools).

The Undergraduate University Programme in Mathematics Education provides the acquisition of basic mathematical skills and those from the field of ICT and basic education in educational sciences. It provides the acquisition of basic knowledge and the understanding of the results in main fields of mathematics. Also, students familiarize themselves with contemporary theories, strategies and methods in the psychology and sociology of education and the possibilities of their applications in elementary and secondary schools. This study provides students with the ability to understand simple mathematical proofs and also logical argumentation in general situations, the ability of mathematical modelling of simpler situations and the ability of creative problem solving by using mathematical tools and ICT. The students of this undergraduate programme have also developed practical skills of the use and application of ICT and they are also able to further their education in the fields of mathematics, computer science and educational sciences. During their study, students are familiarized with various fields of mathematics, which are part of the curriculum in elementary and secondary schools, and through four one-semester seminars have further developed their professional and communicational skills.

The conditions necessary for a successful ending of the programme are passing grades from all subjects included in the programme (available at www.math.hr). During the first year of the Undergraduate University Programme in Mathematics Education students gain fundamental knowledge from the basic fields of mathematics (mathematical analysis, linear algebra, geometry) and also, psychology and ICT. On their second year they broaden the knowledge gained on the first year and also acquire basic terms in algorithmic thinking, sociology of education and English. They also, through seminars, develop their professional and communicational skills. Depending on their choosing, students familiarize themselves with the basics of programming during their second year or gain the basics of physics. During their third year students acquire basic knowledge of combinatorics and discrete mathematics, probability and statistics, number theory, ordinary differential equations, numerical mathematics and educational science. By choosing two out of four optional modules (algebra, analysis, geometry, and computer science) they gain deeper understanding of two areas of mathematics. Bachelors of Education in Mathematics become competent for: a) knowledge and understanding of: basic concepts in all fields of mathematics and computer science, basic concepts in educational science, key concepts in ICT development; b) problem solving: algebra, analysis, discrete mathematics, geometry, statistics and probability, psychology of education, sociology of education and educational sciences; c) the use of ICT: Windows, MS Office, FrontPage, Mathematica; d) practical skills: the ability to conduct searches of literature, and to use databases and other sources of information, team work on smaller project assignments, presentation of concrete results through seminars.

**Professional status**

The Undergraduate University Programme in Mathematics Education is the first in two cycles in the education of future teachers of mathematics and/or computer science in elementary and secondary schools. The second cycle is the two-year Graduate University Programme in Mathematics (and Computer Science) Education. Holders of the degree Bachelor of Education in Mathematics can exercise professional work in various technical fields and occupations in economy, state management and the public sector which include analytical ways of thinking, basic knowledge in mathematics and computer science, the ability of mathematical modelling and problem solving, understanding of statistics, the ability to organize, analyze and present information and apply ICT.

**Access to further study**

After completion of the undergraduate university degree programme, a student acquires the right to enrol in each of seven graduate university studies of the Faculty of Sciences, Department of Mathematics, University of Zagreb. Requirements for admission to university or professional study programmes at other higher education institutions are determined by these institutions.
