Particular objectives of the working groups (WG) research include:
#WG1 (basement group): to obtain new insights regarding the processes and products of the main Cretaceous events in the evolution of the Dinarides and the relics of the crystalline basement of the Pannonian Basin and the Dinarides, which are presently poorly understood. This includes the knowledge on magmatic and metamorphic processes, on their relative sequence, as well as their dependence on P-T and broader tectonic processes. This will enable the formulation of geodynamic models and improve correlation with neighbouring terrains and relevant igneous-metamorphic complexes. The specific goals are: definition of conditions of genesis, age refinement of magmatic and metamorphic complexes and their interrelations using new dating methods of specific minerals occurring within a strictly defined mineral association(s).
#WG2 (basin group): to obtain new knowledge on the up-to-now relatively poorly understood tectonic evolution of the NE Dinaric orogen, as a part of the Alpine chain, based on information stored in Cretaceous clastic formations. Field sedimentology, stratigraphy and detailed provenance analysis of clastic units could provide knowledge on the role of recycling, the types of sedimentary basins and their tectonic environments, the propagation of tectonic structures as well as ocean closure. The specific goals are: to place constraints on sediment sources in order to evaluate the contribution of detrital material being supplied from different tectonic units, thus assessing important regional paleogeographic relations during the Cretaceous, including paleogeographic connections within the basin system itself. A further goal is to improve the often problematic correlation of isolated and patchy outcrops of deformed Cretaceous clastic successions along the Dinarides. Constraints will be placed on the age of the deposits by identification of youngest detrital mineral ages and biostratigraphy. Next is to determine the regional impact and extent of Cretaceous basement exhumation on sediment production and dispersal within the Dinarides and to evaluate the contribution of igneous activity as a sediment source by identification of detrital grains with synsedimentary crystallization ages.
#WG3 (platform group): to analyze the Cretaceous evolution of the Adriatic Carbonate Platform in order to discriminate the contribution of eustatic sea-level changes, synsedimentary tectonics and global events (like the well-known Oceanic Anoxic Events) on determined facies variability. Careful spatial and temporal correlation of events recorded within carbonate rocks in the region of the Karst Dinarides might contribute to the recognition of large-scale tectonic control recorded in the crystalline basement and basinal areas in between them. Partial goals are correlation of Late Cretaceous temporary platform-drowning events, correlation of the final uplift of the Adriatic Carbonate Platform which was significantly diachronous.
The expected results encompass a large number of new fundamental insights into the evolution and structure of the Earth’s crust in the study area, as well as the processes and parameters recognizable at the Earth surface. The results are related to poorly investigated and even unknown areas, objects and topics. We expect that the application of advanced methods proposed for solving fundamental scientific questions will contribute to the improvement of present-day shortcomings.
