Borna Fuerst Bjeliš, znanstvena savjetnica i redovita profesorica Sveučilišta u Zagrebu u trajnom zvanju. God 2012. dobila je nagradu „Federik Grisogono“ za znanstvena ostvarenja i osobit doprinos razvoju geografije u Hrvatskoj, a 2021. godišnju Nagradu za znanost Hrvatskog geografskog društva. U razdoblju od 2017-19 obnašala je dužnost dopredsjednice Europskog udruženja za povijest okoliša (ESEH). Od 2016. je članica Upravnog odbora, a 2020. je imenovana predsjednicom Komisije za marginalizaciju i globalizaciju Međunarodne geografske unije (IGU). Hrvatska je koordinatorica Međunarodne godine globalnog razumjevanja (IYGU), inicijative Međunarodne geografske unije (2016.).
Diplomirala je geografiju na Prirodoslovno-matematičkom fakultetu Sveučilišta u Zagrebu 1983, magistrirala 1990, a doktorsku disertaciju obranila 1996. godine na istom sveučilištu. Nakon doktorata usavršavala se na više inozemnih instituta i sveučilišta u okviru kraćih studijskih boravaka (St. Gallen, Bern, Madrid, Boston). Aktivno se služi engleskim i francuskim jezikom, a pasivno njemačkim, talijanskim i slovenskim.
Od 1984. – 1989. godine bila je zaposlena kao član uredništva na Kartografskom odjelu Leksikografskog zavoda „Miroslav Krleža“, a od 1989. godine do danas na Sveučilištu u Zagrebu / Prirodoslovno-matematičkom fakultetu, u Zavodu za regionalnu geografiju i metodiku Geografskog odsjeka. Od 1997. obnašala je više funkcija na Sveučilištu u Zagrebu (predsjednica Povjerenstva za utvrđivanje kriterija i potvrdu izbora u zvanja Vijeća Prirodoslovnog područja, članica Povjerenstva za utvrđivanje kriterija i potvrdu izbora u zvanja Senata SuZ), na razini fakulteta (prodekanica za međunarodnu suradnju , ECTS koordinatorica, zamjenica i vršiteljica dužnosti predsjednika Etičkog povjerenstva fakulteta u dva mandata), te na razini Odsjeka (predstojnica Zavoda za regionalnu geografiju i metodiku u dva mandata, zamjenica pročelnika, voditeljica doktorskog studija te koordinatorica za međunarodnu suradnju tijekom 8 godina).
Područje djelovanja u znanosti je povijest okoliša, posebno prostorno usmjereno na krški mediteranski i perimediteranski prostor, te pogranična područja, historijska geografija i kartografija, te prostorne percepcije i prostorni (regionalni) identiteti. Bila je voditeljica znanstvenog projekta MZOŠ-a i potpore Sveučilišta u Zagrebu o promjenama okoliša, kulturnim pejzažima regionalnim identitetima, koordinatorica za RH na dva međunarodna projekta, te suradnica na još 6 projekta (2 međunarodna). Objavila je ukupno više od stotinu radova, od toga 6 znanstvenih knjiga te više od 70-tak recenziranih poglavlja u znanstvenim knjigama i članaka u znanstvenim časopisima.
Uz brojna izlaganja na domaćim i međunarodnim konferencijama, održala je i 11 plenarnih i sekcijskih pozvanih predavanja na međunarodnim znanstvenim skupovima i međunarodnim ljetnim školama u Europi, Kanadi i SAD. Kroz Erasmus program gostovala je u više navrata na Sveučilištu u Portu, Portugal te kroz CEEPUS program na Sveučilištu u Ljubljani. Dobitnica je plakete i medalje Sveučilišta u Zadru 2015. godine te plakete Sveučilišta u Mostaru 2020. godine za poseban doprinos suradnji.
Od početka nastavne djelatnosti izvodila je nastavu iz ukupno 20 kolegija na Sveučilištu u Zagrebu na studijima Geografije i Znanosti o okolišu na svim razinama studija te na doktorskim studijima na sveučilištima u Zadru i Mostaru. Također izvodi mentorsku nastavu na engleskom jeziku za strane studente. Dosada je bila mentorica u 80 završnih (diplomskih) radova studenata, u 2 magistarska rada, 10 doktorskih disertacija te studentskih radova nagrađenih Rektorovom nagradom.
Koautorica je sveučilišnog udžbenika "Historijska geografija Hrvatske" (Sveučilište u Splitu) , urednica knjige u slobodnom pristupu "Mediterranean Identities - Environment, Society, Culture" (InTechOpen) te urednica, redaktorica i autorica poglavlja u hrvatskim izdanjima knjiga: „Što je povijest okoliša“ (D. Hughes) i „Globalna povijest okoliša“ (I.G. Simmons) (Disput). Također je autorica i (ko)urednica u Springerovim serijama "The perspectives on geographical marginality" i "Environmental History" (Volume "Environmental Histories of the Dinaric Karst") i koautorica znanstvene monografije "The Historical Geography of Croatia - Territorial Change and Cultural Landscapes" u Springerovoj seriji "Historical Geography and Geosciences".
Članica je većeg broja međunarodnih asocijacija (International Geographic Union /Marginalization and regional and local response commission; European Society for Environmental History; Association for Croatian Studies; Association of American Geographers/ Specialty group Environment and Perception) kao i hrvatskih znanstveno-stručnih asocijacija (Hrvatsko geografsko društvo; Hrvatsko kartografsko društvo; Hrvatsko geomorfološko društvo), a u većini je bila/jest članicom upravnih tijela. Bila je članicom znanstvenih odbora brojnih nacionalnih i internacionalnih konferencija, a začetnicom i predsjednicom organizacijskog odbora prve konferencije Međunarodne geografske unije održane u Hrvatskoj, u Dubrovniku 2012., kao i 9. bijenalne konferencije Europskog udruženja za povijest okoliša (ESEH) 2017. u Zagrebu.
Na brojne je načine sudjelovala u popularizaciji znanosti (uredništvo časopisa, gostovanja u znanstvenim i znanstveno-popularnim emisijama HTV-a („Znanstvena petica“) i III. Programa Hrvatskog radija („Doba znanosti“, „Forum“), te držala javna predavanja u Hrvatskom geografskom društvu u Zagrebu i Zadru.
