Generalized symmetries in field theory
This thesis investigates generalized symmetries in field theory, addressing limitations of standard formalisms when confronted with dualities, complex gauge systems, and non-commutative structures related to string theory and quantum gravity. We explore specific instances where advanced mathematical frameworks - notably, homotopy algebras, higher algebroids, and generalized geometry - are essential.
Key results include establishing a geometric interpretation for the BV/BRST quantization of higher-dimensional brane sigma models (twisted R-Poisson examples) by identifying interaction coefficients with novel polytorsion and polycurvature tensors on associated gapped Lie n-algebroids.
Further investigations reveal the underlying Hopf algebra structure within L∞-algebras, enabling the systematic construction of braided L∞-algebras via Drinfel’d twists, relevant for braided gauge symmetries. We also construct a consistent Non-Commutative Double Field Theory (NC DFT) merging Moyal-Weyl non-commutativity with the T-duality manifest framework of DFT, centered around a generalized star metric and deformed symmetries.
Collectively, these studies demonstrate the necessity and utility of generalized symmetry principles and associated higher mathematical structures in advancing our understanding of fundamental interactions.
