Pressure evolutions of electronic and crystal structures of europium compounds
Strongly correlated 4f-electron systems are rich in phenomena, such as Kondo effect, valence fluctuation, quantum critical behavior, and unconventional superconductivity. Recently, a new class of heavy-fermion superconductors have been discovered among the compounds without inversion symmetry in their crystal structures. The superconductivity in non-centrosymmetric compounds often emerges under pressure. Non-centrosymmetric EuTGe3 series (space group I4mm) host divalent Eu ions (4f7, J=7/2) and exhibit antiferromagnetic ordering at low temperature (< 15 K), while the ordering direction depends on the selection of T: transition metal [1]. In my dissertation, I studied the electronic and crystal structures of EuTGe3 (T=Co, Rh, Ir) under pressure with complementary experimental techniques, namely x-ray spectroscopy, x-ray diffraction, and electrical resistivity measurements. The study unveiled a continuous increase of the Eu valence by applying pressure in all compounds. However, its pressure evolution varies depending on T [2]. By applying pressure, the lattice volume continuously contracts without structural transitions. An anisotropic compressibility between a-and c-axis was observed in all compounds. The details of the differences in pressure response of Eu valence and crystal structure arising from different nature among 3d, 4d and 5d transition metal ions will be presented in my seminar.
