Measuring Atmospheric Composition Change in the Canadian
High Arctic
ABSTRACT: The Arctic is an important environment to study for monitoring climate change. With very few measurement sites in High Arctic regions, the long term data collection done at high latitude research stations is essential to understanding our changing world. Petra will discuss atmospheric composition measurements being taken at the Polar Environment Atmospheric Research Laboratory (PEARL) located at an Environment and Climate Change Canada weather research station in Eureka, Nunavut (79°59'N 85°57'W), and her research in Fourier Transform InfraRed (FTIR) spectroscopy.

Negative Carbon: Methods for Monitoring and Designing Carbon Capture Systems
ABSTRACT: From a scientific perspective, climate change is undeniable and large in part due to excessive emission of carbon dioxide over the last couple decades. Natural systems exhibit a variety of methods for managing these emissions but they are highly location and season dependent. As such, developments in carbon capture (CCS) technology have shown promise in providing a practical solution, primarily direct air capture (DAC) and carbon dioxide mineralization.
To promote these technologies, some organizations run competitions for students to showcase their new ideas. A team from the University of Waterloo created a prototype system using a novel phosphate-activated moisture-swing adsorbent in a fluidized bed reactor configuration and using algae (C. vulgaris) for sequestration. With development comes also regulation, a key aspect in ensuring safety, effectiveness, and reliability. Companies like Ocean Networks Canada specialize in all techniques of CCS and offer monitoring, reporting, and verification for projects looking to study their development.
