Research on individual differences in behaviour: how evolution can actively maintain individual variation

In most animal populations that have been examined, individual differences in behaviour have been observed. In the last decade, these have become a major area of research within behavioural ecology. From a theoretical perspective, it is unclear how these differences are maintained. As part of a larger research initiative, we worked on numerical models to examine conditions that can lead to the evolution of continous variation. With our numerical models we show that resource distributions play a decisive role in the maintenance of variation of costly competitive traits.

Funding opportunities in Germany and how DFG applications are handled

Based on my experience as a DFG-board member, I will give an overview over the different third-party funding programmes in Germany. My aim is first, to inform the attendents why third-party funding has become so important in Germany. My second aim is to inform junior scientists about funding options in Germany and how to be successful with an application. My third aim is to inform more senior researchers about the structure of the funding programmes and the evaluation of applications, so that we can discuss similarities and differences to the situation in Croatia.
